May 15, 2006 - Is Florida About to Come to A Screeching Halt? - Due to a Miami federal court ruling, the supply of rock so important to meeting Florida's growing transportation needs is in serious jeopardy. A shut-down of Lake Belt mining in Miami-Dade would have a disastrous effect on ALL of Florida. It would run the very real risk of bringing Florida's economy and transportation system to a screeching halt! We think Florida should "Keep On Rockin!" ... in order to keep Florida's transportation system "rollin!" That's why FBT formed the "Keep Florida Rockin!" April 24, 2006 - Last week FBT issued a News Release concerning the possible shut-down of limestone mining in Miami-Dade and the disastrous statewide transportation implications of such action. NOW would be a great time to A.) e-mail, B.) write, C.) call, and/or D.) visit your Legislators and express support for this common sense idea!
April 3, 2006 - Last week, FBT President Doug Callaway testified in support of legislation that would authorize a Local "Option" Rental Car Surcharge. This legislation would authorize county governments to seek voter support to increase their existing $2 per day Rental Car Surcharge to $4 per day and use the new revenue for local transportation improvements. Simply put, it would be a local decision about local funding for local needs.

January 9, 2006 - Florida is the fastest-growing state with numbers now exceeding even California and Texas! A negative consequence of this growth is a sharp rise in the costs associated with transportation improvements. These increased costs have forced FDOT to delay vitally-important transportation projects. This trend CAN'T be allowed to continue. That’s why FBT is urging the Legislature to use a significant portion of the additional $3.2 billion in state revenue expected over the next two years to RESTORE these projects and help “Keep Florida Moving!”.

Based upon a new Census Bureau survey, Florida has 3 cities with the longest national commuting times and 16 counties! What this Census data shows is that instead of remaining the "Sunshine State" ... Florida is rapidly becoming the "Great State of Wait!"
March 28, 2005 - The American Society of Civil Engineers (ASCE) recently released their "2005 Report Card for America's Infrastructure." This report reveals that our nation's infrastructure has shown little to no improvement since receiving a collective D+ in 2001, with some areas sliding toward failing grades. Roads received a "D" grade, while Aviation and Transit each did only slightly better with "D+" grades.
March 21, 2005 - At a recent Press Conference, FBT released the results of a Mason-Dixon survey in which the need for more transportation money was made plain. Three-fourths of Florida voters believe elected leaders should put more money into transportation and these same voters said lawmakers need not fear voter retribution if they raise motorists’ fees to do it. During this Press Conference, FBT also announced a new Web-based campaign -- GetFloridaMoving.org -- to encourage Florida lawmakers to support more money for transportation.
March 14, 2005 - FBT President Doug Callaway and 2005 FBT Chairman Tom Conrecode joined members of the Florida Transportation Commission in Washington, D.C. last week for meetings with the Florida Congressional Delegation. While there, the House of Representatives passed H.R. 3 - "The Transportation Equity Act - A Legacy for Users" by a vote of 417-9. In it's current form, H.R. 3 represents little progress for Florida on the key "donor issue."
March 7, 2005 - Florida is a state in the grips of gridlock, and it's time our elected leaders do something about it. That's why we will launch a new initiative this week called GetFloridaMoving.org. This new grassroots effort is aimed at persuading Florida's leaders to "Get Florida Moving" during the upcoming 2005 Legislative Session. Soon all Floridians will be able to visit www.GetFloridaMoving.org and tell their legislators the time they are wasting is ours -- and the time to act is now!

February 21, 2005 - According to published reports, House Transportation and Infrastructure Committee Chairman Don Young has reached a deal with House Majority Leader Tom DeLay on transportation funding for donor states like Florida. Apparently, Young has promised DeLay and lawmakers from donor states that the minimum guaranteed rate of return will rise from 90.5 percent to 92 percent in the surface transportation reauthorization bill, and the current formula retained that determines which programs are counted toward calculating a state's rate of return.
February 14, 2005 - Florida has a HUGE problem on the horizon. An enormous financial “sinkhole” is looming ahead. According to FDOT, over the next ten years we need an additional $23 BILLION just to keep things the way they are TODAY! If left unattended, this “sinkhole” on the road to our future could cause serious harm to our economy, our citizens, our trading ability, our growth management efforts, and the very quality of life we all value. Steps must be taken today to “bridge” Florida’s transportation funding deficit.
February 7, 2005 - Obviously, the Investment$ in Motion plan would help get Floridians out of traffic jams, but what would it cost the average Florida driver? About $40 a year. That’s only $3.38 per month, 78 cents a week, or 11 cents a day! For about the price of a McDonald’s Happy Meal or less than one video rental a month, the Investment$ in Motion proposal would help all Floridians and our millions of visitors.
January 31, 2005 - A recent poll in Miami-Dade County shows a majority are spending more time stuck in traffic than a year ago, and it's harming their quality of life. These results clearly confirm the need for additional transportation dollars in Florida and lends support to the Investment$ in Motion plan.

January 17, 2005 - Floridians for Better Transportation (FBT) is pleased to be a cosponsor of Florida's second Transportation Planning Exchange, TRANSPLEX 2005. See www.transplexfl.com.
January 10, 2005 - This week FBT President Doug Callaway will be testifying before the Florida Senate's Transportation Committee on the "Investment$ in Motion" plan. Having recently undergone some minor modifications to make it even more attractive to Legislators and their constituents, the Investment$ in Motion proposal would still provide $13.6 billion MORE for transportation in Florida over the next ten years -- without raising the state gas tax!
January 3, 2005 - President Reagan proved tax cuts can spur our economy. But he also knew investment in our highway and public transportation infrastructure is essential. That's why he raised the federal highway user fee 5 cents in 1982. Now its time for our state leaders to consider adjusting NOT the gas tax but other state transportation user fees to make our transportation system safer and to reduce traffic congestion.
